Zelen is the most widespread autochthonous grape variety in the Vipava Valley, covering about 90 hectares. Already cited by Janez Vajkard Valvasor in 1689 in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, Zelen is a white grape variety that has strong smells, with more Mediterranean herbs dominating the scent rather than fruit aromas. Pinela: A Secret Treasure

Few winemakers nowadays are making Klarnica in the Vipava Valley’s central area, producing it as fresh, young, macerated wine and even dessert wine from dried grapes. It is a white cultivar that comes across as an odd gem to those interested in accessing the regional heritage.
