The Vipava Valley is a gem of Slovenia, renowned for its centuries-long tradition of wine production, natural beauty, and hospitality of the people. Concealed in the far-off western region of the country, the valley is surrounded by natural plateaus—Nanos, Trnovo Forest, and Karst—that form a stunning landscape and play a crucial role in the creation of its own microclimate. To the west, the valley opens onto the Friulian Plain, where warmth from the Mediterranean air flows in and brings ideal conditions for growing vines. Vipava Valley wines mirror this ideal balance between climate and terroir, making its wine heritage all the more superior.

A Legacy of Indigenous Grape Varieties

The Vipava Valley is blessed with the highest number of Slovenian indigenous grape varieties, which have centuries of winemaking history. The valley had 54 autochthonous grape varieties before phylloxera, which arrived from America. Although the numbers have dwindled since then and are still in single digits, individuality is still represented by those rare wines.

Zelen: The Jewel of Vipava Valley

Zelen is the most widespread autochthonous grape variety in the Vipava Valley, covering about 90 hectares. Already cited by Janez Vajkard Valvasor in 1689 in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, Zelen is a white grape variety that has strong smells, with more Mediterranean herbs dominating the scent rather than fruit aromas. Its graceful and crisp personality makes it a wine worth tasting for every wine enthusiast visiting the area.

Pinela: A Secret Treasure

Pinela, another prized variety, comes from the neighboring Italian region but has found its true home on the slopes of the upper Vipava Valley. Thriving in poor, dry ground, Pinela is augmented by the burja—a wild wind that brings a touch of the continental climate to the valley. Aromatic with strong floral and fruity scents, this light white wine offers a taste of the Vipava Valley’s natural beauty in every sip.

Klarnica: The Wine with a Legend

There is a legend that Klarnica was named by a lovely girl named Klara from the village of Dornberk, who used to hide behind the vines to avoid her suitors. In the 19th century, Matija Vertovec wrote about it being a commonly grown sort throughout the entire valley. Few winemakers nowadays are making Klarnica in the Vipava Valley’s central area, producing it as fresh, young, macerated wine and even dessert wine from dried grapes. It is a white cultivar that comes across as an odd gem to those interested in accessing the regional heritage.

Other Indigenous Varieties

The abundant wine-growing tradition of the Vipava Valley also includes other less well-known grape varieties such as pergulin, poljšakica, vitovska grganja, picolit, and pokalca. Each of the mentioned varieties has a tale to tell, enriching the valley’s richly diverse and interesting wine culture.

A Wine Journey Through History and Flavors

Traveling to the Vipava Valley is not only a wine tour—it’s a sampling of the soul of Slovenian culture and the universe of Vipava Valley wines. The valley’s winemakers are passionate stewards of tradition, welcoming visitors to explore their vineyards and sample their unique creations. Whether you’re tasting Zelen’s herbal notes, savoring Pinela’s floral elegance, or discovering the charm of Klarnica, each glass of Vipava Valley wine offers a connection to the land and its history.
